Ife central state constituency Bye- Election: INEC assures Residents of Free and fair poll.

‎A total of sixty-two thousand, three hundred and ninety three (622,393)  eligible voters are expected to participate in the saturday April 9 Bye election into the Ife central state constituency, Osun state.

INEC resident electoral commissioner in charge of the Bye election Alhaji Nasiru Ayilara stated this while briefing newsmen on the commission's level of preparation for the poll.

Alhaji Ayilara who maintained that INEC is prepared to conduct a free, fair and credible poll come saturday, disclosed that the materials for the bye election were already in the custody of the commission and would be distributed tomorrow for upward movement to the local government.

While assuring the 817 adhoc staff of INEC of their safety‎, Ayilara explained that there would be restriction of movement between the hours of 8:00am and 4:00pm in the local government.

He said "due to the political nature of the local government area, the commission has fashioned out to security measures that would guarantee the safety of both INEC officials and the electorates.

" we had met with all the security agencies in the state and they have assured the commission of safety of both electoral officials and the voters".

Meanwhile the two major political parties in the state have expressed divergent views on the commission decision not to distribute the materials today.

‎The agent of the All progressives Congress Mr Adeosun Razak said " it is unconventional that we will inspect materials today, leave them at the state secretariat of INEC and then wait till tomorrow for the materials to be moved to thee field. We have not done this before, the normal practice is to examine the materials and get it loaded into local government vehicles for movement.

In fact, it is in our practice in the APC that we get our own people to accompany such materials to the field, because we have had cases in the past when materials were diverted"

But the Agent of the Peoples Democratic P‎arty, Mr Sunday Adewole believes that the decision " will prevent ballot papers from being moved to wrong places or hand. It's good that INEC decided to wait till friday before moving the materials"

‎The Bye election would take place in 168 polling units of 11 wards in Ife central local government area of the state.

‎The Ife central state constituency in the osun House of Assembly became vacant following the death of the minority leader of the house Hon Oladejo Makinde, on December  27th 2015.

FAYOSE, ALUKO RECONCILIATION CHANGES NOTHING ON EKITIGATE, SAYS APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekti State has said that the purported truce between Governor Ayodele Fayose and State Secretary of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), Dr Tope Aluko, will not alter anything on the revelations so far on the probe of the June 21, 2014 governorship election fraud.
The party's reaction followed insinuations that the weekend peace meeting between the duo was a blow to a just conclusion of the military probe into an election in which the Federal Government deployed the military and cash to influence the result in Fayose's favour as revealed in the secretly recorded audio tape by Army Captain Sagir Koli.
The truce report has started generating ripples among Nigerians, with Fayose's media aide, Lere Olayinka, dismissing the army probe as a charade to dismiss innocent military officers after Aluko was allegedly goaded by APC to lie against the governor to upturn the controversial election.
But APC Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, said in a statement on Monday that the reported truce between Fayose and Aluko would not alter anything in the revelations at the probe panel.
He said it was mischievous to insinuate that Aluko was lured by APC to lie against Fayose and the military officers who were dismissed  after they were found guilty by the Army probe panel.
Dismissing allegation that Aluko was lured by APC to implicate Fayose and the soldiers, Olatunbosun explained:
"This is purely an internal matter within PDP and so APC has no hand in it. The reported meeting between Fayose and Aluko brokered by PDP leaders has proven conclusively that the latter is a full member of PDP.
"It is that recognition by PDP that made its leaders to invite the duo to a peace meeting, and contrary to Olayinka's insinuation, it is on record that Aluko had always insisted that his revelation at the probe panel was in response to APC's petition against him on the controversial election in which he had to make restitution through confession to clear his conscience."
He added: "It is mischievous to insinuate that Aluko's reconciliation with Fayose will hurt the credibility of the probe panel. We must note that Aluko swore to an oath before making his testimony at the probe panel, and so his statement remains sacrosanct till the last is heard on the matter to ensure justice in the resolution of Ekitigate."
He also warned Olayinka against attempt to discredit the entire probe process by saying that the military relied on Aluko's lie to dismiss its top officers.
"The military top echelons are not fools to dismiss the affected officers on mere lies. They must have had their facts after presentation of documentary evidence and the affected officers defended themselves before they could arrive at the conclusion to sack the indicted officers.
"The Military High Command must note that the trick of criminals all over the world is to blackmail in order to curry undeserved sympathy.
"It is on this note that we urge the Army Council to release the full report of the probe panel to the public so that the military High Command does not fall victim to these characters in Ekiti State who are determined to discredit the military and the entire investigation process in the Ekiti State poll fraud.
"Fayose as a master of stunts can continue to entertain himself till eternity. Just as his military accomplices have met their comeuppance, so shall Fayose and his accomplices meet their waterloo at the conclusion of this battle between him and the Nigerian law," he concluded.

AREGBESOLA PRESENTS LAND USE CHARGE TO BOOST STATE ECONOMY

Osun state Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, on Tuesday April 5, 2016 presented the Land Use Charge with a view to increase the Internally Generated Revenue of the state.

Aregbesola during the public presentation of Land Use Charge at the Exco Lounge, Governor's office, Abere, Osogbo, said the land owner would be allowed to appeal high or low charges but the half of the charges must be paid before the appeal.

He said the new law was initiated as a viable alternative to oil money, urging the people of the state to join hands with the government to make the new law work.

He said Nigeria dependence on oil has caused more hardship than succour, adding "taxation remains the only viable and sustainable way civilized societies fund, sustain and maintain their government.

Speaking, Consultant on Land Use Charge, Pastor Olumide Bolorunduro, said the charges was to harmonize all property laws like tenement rate among others.

He added that location, quality, size and value of the area will be considered in order to bring out the charge, stressing that bankers have been appointed to collect in order to block leakages.

Bolorunduro stated further that Finance Ministry, Works and Land including other professionals, collectively calculated the formula, saying that the taxation was a collective responsibility.

He said the charges was to stem up the Internally Generated Revenue of the state, adding that "it is a call to rally round the government so as to have enough fund to govern the state"

Former Commissioner for Regional Integration and Special Duties, Dr Ajibola Basiru, stated that some properties were exempted in line with Section 8 of the law.

According to Basiru, properties used exclusively for religious purposes, Cemeteries and burial ground, registered educational institute that is non-profit making, property used solely for Non-governmental Organization activities and traditional grounds were exempted.

He added that Motherless baby home, Palaces of recognized Obas and Villages heads (Baales), were also exempted from the charges.

Speaker, Rt Hon Najeem Salaam, said the law was not new even if it is new in Osun.

He noted that the state House of Assembly had organized a public hearing on November 3rd, 2015, before the final passage of the bill.

He however advised the executive to ensure that enough awareness is carried out on the bill, saying the formula was designed to make it application easy for the people of the state.

The speaker however promised that the house will always provide enabling environment for the state to grow, adding that "if this law is well implemented, our IGR in Osun will definitely improve"

According to him, it would also discourage the use of underage to hawk in line with Child Right Act.
Regretting that many lives have been lost due to roadside accidents with street traders being the major victims, Salaam said, the law was borne out of the government commitment to safe the lives of its citizenry.

The speaker who noted that the bill would be forwarded to the Governor for his assent, expressed hope that it would be effectively implemented to the benefit of the people of the state.
Also, at the plenary, the state Micro-credit Agency Bill came up for consideration and the speaker directed that a letter be written to the executive to correct the lacuna observed between the existing law passed in 2006 and the new bill before the House.

APC faults NLC boss' encomium on Gov. Mimiko

The Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has faulted the comments of the President of Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Ayuba Wabba on the tenure and performance of the state governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko.

The NLC president had through a letter of commendation written to the governor, congratulated him on the 7th year anniversary and 40th anniversary of the state for transforming Ondo to a modern and one of the leading states in the country.

However, the APC in a statement signed by its State Publicity Secretary, Omo'ba Abayomi Adesanya, said, "on completion of his uneventful 8 years tenure, all indications have shown that Gov. Mimiko would be leaving the state worse than he met it".

The seven years is characterized with pains, anti-masses policies, suffering boldly written on the faces of the people. According to him, it is seven years of unemployment, forced tax, none payments of workers salaries and total neglect of pensioners, unwarranted retrenchment, infrastructural decay, economic depression and backwardness in our dear sunshine state. 'I will work for you' in actual sense means 'I will deal with you'.

"Where is the six-lane roads Governor Mimiko promised the Akure people? Where is the small London he promised to turn the State Capital into? Why did he abandon all projects Dr. Olusegun Agagu's administration could not complete? Projects like the Owena Water Dam which Agagu administration spent billions of naira on; the Olokola Free-Trade Zone; the OK-LNG Plant; the uncompleted Akure Township Stadium at Araromi; the Refinery he promised during his campaign for the second term, to mention but a few.

The Ondo APC spokesperson said “the seven  years of Governor Mimiko has brought no tangible development into State. Almost all roads in Akoko land are in a state of disrepair; our Local Government Areas Headquarters have become mushrooms and reduced to mere looting centres;  Ondo State Oil Producing Area Development Commission (OSOPADEC) put in place to carter for the needs of the Ilaje oil producing areas Communities, has nothing to show for the several billions of Naira accruing to it for seven years under Mimiko’s watch; The 2000 teachers Mimiko promised to employ in year 2014 has become a mirage;  Ondo State being the richest State in the South-West after Lagos, has nothing to show for all monies accrued to it from the Federation Account, common a kilometre of road has not been commissioned by this government in seven years;  What our dear Governor Olusegun Mimiko is good at is buying awards all over the places, sponsor PDP political meetings on behalf of President Goodluck Jonathan, run propaganda on the media to misinform the public on the true state of our dear Sunshine State.

Omo'ba Adesanya said, "Olusegun Mimiko took over from Olusegun Agagu in 2009 with viable assets and N44billion cash. Today, it is saddened to note that, there are liabilities in all parastatals and ministries in the state. The debt profile has risen to over N100billion, nothing to show for it and the over N1.2trillion allocation accrued to the state from the Federation account for seven years.

"The people don't need the comments of Mr. Wabba ‎to know if Ondo State has been transformed or not. We urge our people to disregard the praises ushered on Gov. Mimiko by the praise singer.

"Meanwhile, it is clearly obvious that having lost acceptability at home, the administration of Gov. Mimiko has embarked on recruitment of foreign praise singers in the guise of opinion moulders. This is a government in desperate search for foreign endorsement. That was a bad hire.

"It is more worrisome ‎that the uninformed comment of Comrade Wabba was made at a time workers and pensioners alike are being owed over four months salaries and allowances.

"There is no clearer way to show that the leadership of Nigeria Labour Congress is insensitive to the plights and pains of workers in Ondo State. You will recall that, Omo'ba Adesanya had accused the Labour Union leadership in the state of compromise with the government against the workers welfare,  in a statement issued on February 17th, the statement reads.

DODO IKIRE AND ITS ECONOMIC VALUE

The search for a more robust and sustainable economy continues in the face of the persistent drop in the global price of oil, which has unequivocally continued to affect revenue generation capacity of the country.

Taking a reactive measure to salvage the current situation seems to be the only logical option.

The state of Osun, southwest Nigeria, is apparently not left out of the financial downturn that hit the Africa’s largest economy,
Most states of the federation are now financially crippled.

As expected, most of these states, including Osun, have started to look inward to see how the current financial crunch plaguing the system can be tackled.

To this end, the need to invest in local businesses and empower the brains behind such enterprises, becomes imperative, to improve the internally generated revenue of the state and complement the little accrued from the falling federal allocation.

One of such businesses is ‘DODO IKIRE’ a special appetizer /plantain spice made in IKIRE, a community in IREWOLE LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA of Osun state.
A gate way to the state, and a close boundary to Oyo state.

Obviously, named after the town ‘DODO IKIRE’ the economic value of this locally made appetizer to the community and the state at large should not be underestimated.

Ajilo compound in Ikire plays host to the major producers of  DODO IKIRE in the community.

Both young and old in this compound, participate in the production of this product that is made from mostly plantain and other suitable bananas.

A 70year-old Madam Wulemotu Olaniran , has been in the business for a very long time. She speaks on the production of Dodo Ikire and its level of patronage.

'' We use plantain, and other suitable bananas. We use Palm oil and vegetable oil to fry it. And we have clients abroad, who usually request for it, from time to time’
She said her children are not fully into the business, but they help while they are around before seeking greener pasture.

``our children help us here, when they are still looking for another job. we use the money realized from the selling of Dodo ikire, to send our children to the school``

Most sellers of Dodo Ikire hawk along ife\ibadan express way to sell to the travelers.

Abidogun shayo, is a young able boy, and he’s engaged in the selling of DODO IKIRE alongside other young people, who make their legitimate money from the business.

He said "We make at least three to four thousand Naira daily as profit, and we often safe the money for our education and new business"

Buyers and lovers of this great spice believe there is need for the producers to extend their scopes of business beyond the shore of ikire and osun at large.

If the state government could empower Dodo Ikire producers in order to attain large production /quantity, this might as well be a hidden treasure which will improve the internally generated revenue of the state.

Since, the state government is already going above and beyond to ensure a better living condition of its citizenry and meet the financial yearnings of all, perhaps diversification of the economy would be a good thing in this trying time.

Empowering the people involved in this business, might just be a good start towards enlarging their coasts, which may eventually bring about a drastic boost in their earnings, and as such contribute to the economy of the state.

OKADA RIDER EMERGES UNIOSUN BEST STUDENT

28-year-old Okada Rider Adeyemo Kazeem emerged overall best student at the just concluded 4th and 5th  convocation of UNIOSUN with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.81. By achieving this feat, Kazeem , has proved that nothing is impossible to achieve with hard work, determination and prayer. He shares his inspiring journey to his enviable degree in this exclusive interview.

Who is Adeyemo Kazeem
I am a 28-year-old Civil Engineering graduate of the university of Osun State. I am an indigene Ikirun, Ifelodun Local Government Area of the state. I have five siblings. My mother is a teacher, and I haven’t set eyes on my dad for 16 years. I always took the back seat during my primary and secondary school days, because I was very poor academically.

Did your background have any effect on you?
Yes, my family background affected me both positively/negatively. Negatively, in the sense that, I had to ride commercial motorcycle popularly called okada for more than two years because of financial problem, which I believed would have been different had my dad was around. It also affected positively, because I learnt how to take care of myself from that time onward. Although my parents were estranged, they made sure that my siblings and I, had the best education they could afforded.

Why the choice of civil Engineering?
Actually, I didn’t set out to study Civil Engineering. As a young boy, I had always wanted to study medicine at the behest of my mother, who not only love the profession but really wanted me to become a medical doctor. But, as fate would have it, I applied for Bio- chemistry to make transferring to medicine easier, but I was given admission into Civil Engineering department.

How did you find the course?
I found Civil Engineering quite interesting. Had I known that from the onset, perhaps I wouldn’t have nurtured the interest in medicine.
What did you do differently from others that helped this much?
I read a lot and stayed away from home. I only went home twice in five years, apart from going for the student industrial training, which was mandatory. I also prayed vehemently.

What was your typical day like in school?
I usually leave for school as early as possible in order not to miss any class. I read when I know my brain can assimilate and play when I feel otherwise. I simply didn’t have any specific time of reading.
What was it like being the leading student in your class?
As the leading student in my level then, you have to know that there would be pressure to do better, from my class mates and lecturers who expected so much from and that really helped me to in making sure that I maintain my point.

Did you ever plan to graduate with first class?

Not at all, because I had no idea what first class meant at that time. But having attained first class at 100level, I told myself I had to maintain the trend and finish with it. That was when I realized what first class mean and I strived so hard not to fall below that. I subsequently, had first class from 100level through 500level

How often do you read?

I read virtually everyday, but I had no specific pattern of reading.
How did you manage distraction on campus?
The only distraction that really wanted to get in my way was girls, but with the help of MSSN, I was able to summon it. You know as a Muslim and a bachelor, there are things am not allowed to do. So, I can simply say, being a Muslim really helped me in tackling distraction from ladies, because their dressing can be very distracting.

How would you evaluate teachings standard at the university of Osun state?
UNIOSUN is a very serious institution, and if the present standard could be maintained, it will continue to be a standard university, because we had direct and easy access to our lectures. To me, they are not lecturers but teachers, because they adopt the best and easiest measures of teaching and inculcating knowledge in us.

Do you have any intention of going for your Masters soon?
That’s the next thing In sha Allah (God’s willing). What may delay me is financial support, because, right now my parents will have to focus on how to raise my younger ones. I can’t even ask that of them. So, I have to stand on my own now like I once did and struggle to get my masters. It may take sometime, but by God’s grace I’ll achieve it.

What is your definition of success?
Success to me means setting a goal and achieving it.
Would you now say you’re successful?
Yes. As a student, I can say that I have attained a certain level of success and it’s all due to Almighty Allah’s grace. I look forward to a brighter future.

Have you ever been discouraged by the level of unemployment in Nigeria?
Yes. That situation is a very pressing national issue. The labour market is saturated and the number of graduate keeps increasing every year. I strongly believe there need is for all graduates to stop targeting government job and think of something we can achieve on our own.

How would you advise those students who want achieve the same feat as you?
I enjoin them never to think of themselves as being unable to achieve something at any point in time. Whatever the situation they may find themselves, they should be very proactive and make sure that their aims are not defeated. Sky shouldn’t be our limit but the beginning. They have to be determined and face their studies squarely, read more and play less. Hardwork coupled with prayer will always enhance success, they should combine the two.

OLUMIRIN WATERFALLS: A TOURIST CENTRE BEGGING FOR ATTENTION

If nipping the economic adversity affecting many states of the federation in the bud is as important as claimed, looking inward to finding an alternative means of generating revenue can be the key.

Many states like Osun have been said to be economically vulnerable, because of their large dependence on federal allocations over the years.

What many did not know however, is the fact that Osun state has much potentials that could translate into revenue, if well harnessed.\

The attention of this piece centres on the famous “ERIN-IJESHA WATERFALLS” also known as “OLUMIRIN WATERFALLS”.

This beautiful and amazing work of nature is situated in “Erin-Ijesha” Oriade local government area of the State of Osun, Southwest Nigeria.

Said to have been discovered by a woman called Akinla, the founder of Erin-ijesha and a granddaughter of Oduduwa, the progenitor of the Yoruba race in the year 1140 AD, the waterfalls is approximately 2km away from the centre of the town.

Indeed! oluminrin waterfalls is a beauty to behold. The serenity of the site will unarguably ignite unwavering passion in tourists, the uneven steps to the hills will make one gnash ones teeth, while the cool breeze will help calm the nerves.\

Climbing the seven layers of rocks and the waterfalls can be likened to hiking, but the satisfaction that comes with coming face to face with this natural habitat is an experience to have.

Seeing water flows from the uphills, splashing through the vegetation with a great force and landing on the rocks beats any human imagination.\

The newly installed Akila of Erin-ijesha, Oba Isaac Adeyeba Ayeni is of the opinion that with proper upgrade and management, the tourist centre “ERIN-IJESHA WATERFALLS” can sustain the economy of the state.

“What I call our gold or diamond is there…Olumirin waterfalls. If you go there you will see what God has endowed us with. That tourist centre alone can generate a lot of fund for this community and the state at large.

“We settled in this place because of the waterfalls, it took our forefathers 17 days to trek from ile-ife to this place and it was that waterfalls that attracted them. But the waterfalls has been there for years undeveloped; we can turn it around and make it a tourist centre that people all over the world can visit”

“So, I will call on the government to allow serious external investors to come and invest in this place, so that we can generate work for our teeming populace especially the youths who are unemployed at present”

According to a tourist, Abiola Josh, the uniqueness of the site explains the unimaginable wonders of God, attributing its appalling state to the lackadaisical attitude of men.

“I have been there more than three times, and still cannot get enough of this wonder of the Almighty. To know that there is a place so natural to feel the impact of God, for me alone is something to think about.”

“Although the place isn’t usually kept, but, the serenity is enough for one to forget his worries. Like I normally visit the place when I want to get away from the polluted world, and I usually climb to the fourth fall, because most people stop at the first and second falls, because of the amount of stress involved”

Another tourist, Akinwumi Abayomi, describes the site as a place to behold and converge for relaxation and retreat.

“I will never in my life forget the amount of fun and exercise I had during my visit to the waterfalls. Although, I couldn’t climb beyond the second fall, it was one of the real time experiences I have ever had. I kept shouting on top of my voice to hear the echo”

“if the concerned authorities could do well by upgrading this natural endowment to meet international standard, and engage in strategic management, this can go a long way in developing the town and as well generate income for government through tourism”

“I believe many people in this country have no idea that there is such a wonderful place in Osun, all we hear about is Osun grove, which seems more popular because of United Nations and publicity. Government should invest heavily in the place or partner with interested people or group of people”\

This monument is a “treasure” waiting to be harnessed for the development of its natural abode, the state where it belongs and the nation in general.

It was reported that about 50,000 tourists visited the site between January and November 2014, one will then wonder what the number would be,  if the tourist centre is well placed among its equals.

It is obvious that the full potentials of this waterfalls are yet to be harnessed by the appropriate quarters. Developing this site would not only create another means of revenue for the government, but also creates job opportunities and invariably reducing the number of unemployed youths in the state.

The development of this great site called “Olumirin Waterfalls” will no doubt place it on the pedestal of one of the best tourist resorts in Africa.

Meanwhile, a visit to the state of Osun without exploring the beauty of nature at the Erin-Ijesha waterfalls is not complete.
So, next time you are in the land of the virtue, make it part of your plans to visit this natural water habitat.
